Shoreline Response to Climate Change

Shoreline erosion rates may increase with storm events and climate change. Coastal communities and waterfront property owners are particularly concerned by predictions of sea level rise and the resulting impacts to waterfronts. Salt marshes, oyster reefs and seagrasses occupy the shallow nearshore waters, and are also at risk from sea level rise and climate change. These habitats also provide a suite of ecosystem services, including wave attenuation and shoreline stabilization, fishery habitat, wave attenuation, and trapping suspended sediments. We develop information, tools, and guidance in support of sustainable shorelines based on enhancing natural stabilizing processes, and we assist coastal communities in adapting to changing shorelines.
